Establishing and maintaining a healthy work/life balance is crucial throughout the year. One of the most important reasons to have a good work/life balance is it’s good self-care: it helps reduce stress and prevent burnout at work.
Remember from our previous self-care tips: good self-care is holistic and addresses all areas of your life and who you are. If you’re going to take care of yourself at home, in your relationships, with your physical health, and more - shouldn’t you also take care of yourself at work?
So, what is a baseline for a healthy work/life balance? Being able to meet your work deadlines while still having enough quality time for your relationships and personal interests. Also, you should be able to get enough sleep and have enough time to take care of your physical and mental health. Remember: this is just a general baseline. Every job has different requirements and different schedules that people need to meet.
If you find yourself working more hours than your job requires, thinking/worrying about work when you’re at home, or prioritizing work over all other aspects of life, consider getting started on a better work/life balance. Don’t know where to start? Talk to someone you trust at either work or home who can help you set boundaries. You don’t have to tackle the entire balance at once, but if you start with a small step, you can keep going from there.
